Backlog warning over registering births and marriages in Cornwall

Published at 9:34am 12th June 2020. (Updated at 9:38am 12th June 2020)

Five of Cornwall’s Register Offices are now able to make appointments to register a birth or to give notice of a marriage or civil partnership.

Appointments are available at the Helston, Camborne, Truro, St Austell and Liskeard offices, and soon in Bodmin.

But the service warns that they are tackling a backlog of over 850 births and around 1,500 marriage or partnership notices, so waiting times are inevitable.

Edwina Hannaford Cornwall Council Cabinet Member for Climate Change and Neighbourhoods, responsible for the Registration Service, said: “The lockdown restrictions mean we have a backlog of hundreds of births and one and half thousand marriage and partnership notices waiting to be taken.

"The lifting of these restrictions is very welcome news for our customers, and our staff from across the Council have worked really hard following the Government’s announcement to make these vital services available again so quickly. However, I would ask the public to be mindful, please, that they have a challenging workload, with new appointments to be added, so waiting times may be lengthy for a while.”

Proud parents wishing to register the birth of their child or happy couples seeking to give notice of marriage or civil partnership, can once again make appointments for face to face meetings.

A number of changes have been made to the normal appointment process and additional measures have been put in place to ensure the safety of both customers and staff.

Please note that, although an intention to marry or to enter a civil partnership can now be given, ceremonies in churches, register offices or venues are not permitted at present.

A marriage or partnership notice, a statutory document, is valid for 12 months, after which time it would have to be renewed and a new fee paid.
