Disney+ arrives in the UK

Published at 10:35am 24th March 2020. (Updated at 12:38pm 9th April 2020)

Back in November of last year, Disney launched their new streaming service Disney+ in the USA and a handful of other locations. Now, after a 5 month wait, those of us in the UK can finally start binge watching a number of shows, and it's arrived just in the nick of time.

The service replaces Disney Life, which was Disney's tester for a streaming service, so if you had a subscription, that has now been moved over to Disney+

Disney is one of the largest companies in the world and in the past few years has bought a lot of franchises, including Fox, Pixar, Marvel and Lucasfilm. This means their streaming catalogue is pretty huge and Disney are already creating original content for the platform.

How much does it cost?
A Disney+ subscription costs £5.99 per month or £59.99 a year in the UK, or you can take advantage of the seven-day free trial.

Where can I watch?
You can stream Disney+ on their website or through the Disney+ app available on most Android and Apple devices, as well as most Smart TVs and Amazon Fire TV. They've also made a deal with Sky to create a Disney+ add-on, which means you'll be able to sign up to the service and watch it through Sky Q and NOW TV. Alternatively, consoles such as PS4 will also have the app available for download.

How many family members can watch at the same time?
Subscribers can watch on four screens at the same time. You can also register up to ten devices and have up to seven profiles.

I'm already subscribed to Netflix, Amazon, NowTV, why would I want Disney+?

There's a massive choice of shows:

Star Wars series The Mandalorian - a live action show that takes place between episodes VI and VII. (Only episode 1 & 2 available at the moment)
Nearly every episode of The Simpsons.
A new Toy Story series centred on new character Forky, called Forky Asks a Question. .
A National Geographic show led by Jeff Goldblum called – amazingly – The World According to Jeff Goldblum.

The Imagineering Story - a 6 episode look at the behind the scenes creation of Disney's theme parks.

Not forgetting future releases such as:

An Obi-Wan Kenobi Star Wars series, starring Ewan McGregor

The seventh season of the animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars

Several Marvel TV shows such as The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, WandaVision, Loki, Ms Marvel, She-Hulk, Moon Knight and What If…?.

What about films?

Just imagine, most of Disney's film library, from Frozen 2 to Snow White. Not forgetting a huge collection of 20th Century Fox's films, Star Wars, every Disney Marvel movie, everything Pixar...oh, and a couple of original films made especially for the streaming service.

So, if you're a big Disney fan, or just looking for some new shows to watch...or need the kids to be quiet for a while, maybe Disney+ is the one for you.
