With children being out of school and learning at home, now is a great time to test their culinary skills.

Why not let them loose in the kitchen with this fun and easy Spaghetti Bolognese recipe?

Ingredients (serves 4)

    • 500g mince beef
    • 3 rashers of bacon, cut into 2cm wide strips
    • 1 medium onion chopped
    • 1 medium carrot chopped
    • 60g mushrooms sliced
    • 1 clove of garlic peeled and crushed
    • 1 medium tin of tomatoes
    • 2 tbs of tomato puree
    • 90g butter
    • 1/2 tbs dried oregano
    • 1/2 tbs dried basil
    • Salt and black pepper
    • 375g spaghetti

1. On a medium heat, melt half the butter in a pan. Fry the bacon, garlic, onion, carrot and mushrooms in it for 3 minutes until it starts to soften. Stir often to make sure nothing sticks to the pan and be careful the pan isn't too hot - if it is, the bacon will start spitting melted butter out the pan which can burn. You may need an adults help with this bit.

2. Add all of the beef and cook until its brown, stirring frequently to stop it from sticking.

3. Pour in the tomato puree, tinned tomatoes and then sprinkle in the basil and oregano. Give it a good mix!

4. Add 4 tbs water and simmer the sauce for 20 minutes, with the lid on. This should be on a low heat with small bubbles forming gently in the sauce. Give it a stir every couple of minutes for 10 minutes.

         5. Boil 750ml of water in a pan over high heat. Put the spaghetti ends in, then slowly push it all in as it softens.

         6. Boil the spaghetti for about 8 minutes. Once it's soft, (have a careful taste test to see if it is!) tip the spaghetti                    into a colander over the sink to drain it.

         7. Lift the spaghetti onto the plates using two forks. It's quite slippery, so if you do it quickly that might be                                easiest!

         8. Add the rest of the butter and spoon on the bolognese sauce.

         9. If you fancy it, sprinkle some grated cheese on top.

         10. Enjoy the wonderful meal you have made!
