Whilst we're all inside, why not bring some more of the outside in, too?

Bottle gardens are easy to make and can look spectacular!

It’s important to choose plants that like shady, damp conditions, but the good news is, once they're in the bottle, they require very little looking after.

If you're not sure which plants would thrive, here are some that would love a new bottle garden home; croton, fittonia, southern maidenhair fern, club moss and ti plants.

You will need:

  • A wide funnel
  • Rolled up paper
  • Long handled bottle garden tools
  • Drainage stones
  • Granulated charcoal
  • Horticultural grit
  • Houseplant compost
  • and most importantly - plants!

How to plant:

  1. Choose a bottle and give it a good wash to make sure it's nice and clean.
  2. Add 2cm of drainage stones and then spread out with a bottle cleaner or similar.
  3. Next, add the granulated charcoal or horticultural grit via a funnel. You'll need approximately 1 teaspoon for a 5L bottle (2 for 15L, 2.5 for 35L, 3 for 55L).
  4. Pop in a layer of compost that reaches 6-7cm deep, over the stones
  5. Next you get to do the fun bit! Decide where you want the plants to go and firm the composts around them.
  6. Now you need to water them in. Turn the bottle as you add the water and make sure not to over water!
  7. Pop your bottle garden into a bright spot that's out of direct sunlight. Leave the cork out for a week, then lay it on its side for another week
  8. Once condensation on the glass has gone, push the cork in.

And there you have it! One beautiful bottle garden to bring a bit of the outside, in.

There are loads of variations you could do, with no bottle ending up the same. You could use cactus' to make a desert bottle garden or succulents to make a very modern looking garden - let your imagination run wild!
