Nine things that happened in April during lockdown

Published at 7:37pm 30th April 2020. (Updated at 8:26am 5th May 2020)

The whole of April was spent in lockdown, so let's look back at some of the big things that happened.

1) The world went crazy for Tiger King on Netflix

Hey all you cool cats and kittens. With a lot more time spent inside, a lot of us turned to TV and streaming sites to pass the time. Tiger King followed the story of American big cat zoo owner, Joe Exotic, and his feud with Carole Baskin.

It's estimated that Tiger King has been watched by 64 million households worldwide during its first month of release, and who knows how many eyebrow piercing it’s inspired.

Tiger King is now responsible for producing some of the best memes on the internet - including people asking delivery people to 'vote' on issues from the show with where they leave their parcel. We are HERE for it.

2) Boris Johnson made the news, a lot.

On the 5th of April, Boris Johnson was admitted to St Thomas' Hospital, in London, after experiencing persistent coronavirus symptoms. By the 7th, he was put in intensive care due to difficulty breathing. The country watched and waited for a few days before he was given the all clear and was able to leave hospital to recover at home.

He wasn't the only government member to suffer from the virus, Health Secretary Matt Hancock and Health Minister, Nadine Dorries also tested positive, amongst others.

On the 29th of April, he became a father again to a baby boy with fiancé , Carrie Symonds. He has forefeited paternity leave for the minute, and intends on taking it later in the year.

A busy old month for the PM!

3) We actually had a sunny bank holiday!

In a cruel twist of irony, the Easter bank holiday brought glorious sunshine across the country!

Many spent the week of sunshine in their gardens, courtyards and balconies soaking up as much sun as possible.

During their once a day, government approved walk, lots of people took stunning, sunny pictures of the county and whacked them on instagram - which made us jealous of everyone who lives within walking distance of the sea!

The rarely seen sun inspired a trend of people sunbathing in very *unconventional ways* - DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME!

The sun quickly gave way into greyer, cloudier, rainier days - we have our fingers crossed for May!

4) Colonel Tom Moore stole the nation’s heart.

It all started in his back garden in April when he decided to raise money for NHS Charities Together by doing 100 laps of his garden by his 100th birthday.

He initially aimed to raise £1000, but, by his birthday on the 30th of April, he had raised a staggering £31 million.

He received approximately 140,000 100th birthday cards from members of the public, as well as, special congratulatory messages from the Queen and Boris Johnson.

Captain Tom Moore was also given an honorary promotion to Colonel, treated to a fly past from a Spitfire and Hurricane and has been made an honorary England cricketer by Michael Vaughan.

Together with Michael Ball, he is also attributed with a number one single - their duet of You'll Never Walk Alone gave him the honour of being the oldest person to ever reach number one.

He is a man that will stay in our hearts for a long, long time.

5) Run 5, nominate 5, donate 5

If you're on social media, you've probably seen (if not been tagged in) the run for heroes challenge, where you have to run (or walk - thank goodness) 5km, donate £5 to NHS charities together and then nominate 5 others to do it too.

The whole idea was started by Olivia Strong, 27, with help from her siblings and friends. She set out to raise £5k by doing 5k but that target was smashed within four days. She then set her sights *slighter* higher and set the target to £5million.

Although this was a huge target, Olivia hit the total by the end of April, thanks to the challenge going viral.

Even celebrities got involved - Mo Farah (nominated by Romeo Beckham!), Ellie Goulding and Princess Eugenie are just a few who have dusted off their trainers.

In classic, lazy, internet fashion, this challenge was also a hot bed of inspiration for some of our favourite memes of the month!

6) The UK went bananas...

for banana bread!

It turns out everyone had old bananas hanging around and decided the best way forwards was to embrace their inner Mary Berry. Instagram was filled with pictures of oven fresh cake.

Of course, we couldn't ignore the baking hype so presenter Libby did a bake along on our instagram stories - with a bake chosen by you!

She didn't have working scales, or all the ingredients, but taught us that if she can do it, how hard can it be?

This craze for deliciousness is to blame for the supermarket baking shelves being bare - flour became more elusive than toilet roll!

7) Joe Wicks actually got us to do exercise

As the realisation of having to homeschool swept the nation, Joe Wicks offered a helping hand by going live on YouTube, Monday - Friday at 9am, with a PE lesson.

This took the nation by storm as parents joined in with their kids (having dusted off trainers that had sat at the bottom of the cupboard since they were at school) and got physical with The Body Coach.

Joe even took it a step further when he promised to donate the money he earned from YouTube to NHS Charities Together.

What a guy!

8) The Lockdown Lop

All men decided to cut their own hair - we're not sure why but at least it's been very entertaining.

Neil from the Breakfast Show shaved his hair off (we have it on good authority that he's now avoiding mirrors) and many other members of team Pirate kept appearing on video calls looking more and more bald...

Paddy McGuinness took things to a whole new level when he started encouraging men to bleach their hair instead! He absolutely KILLS this look and has kicked off the #bleachchallenge trending on social media.

(Please be careful and read the instructions on the packet if you're going to join in!!).

9) Animal Crossing had a resurgence!

With Nintendo Switches sold out across the country, the release of the updated Animal Crossing: New Horizons came at the perfect time.

Potentially as a way of recovering from time spent with Joe Wicks or all those 5k runs, Animal Crossing: New Horizons has been a massive part of lockdown for a lot of people.

A perfect balance of new features and old characters (good old Tom Nook) has kept lovers of the game extremely happy.

Celebrities including Chrissy Teigen, Brie Larson and Elijah Wood have all been getting in on the wholesome, cosy, gaming action!

So, all in all, despite being inside for most of it, April was pretty eventful!

We've got our fingers crossed for more fun things in May, watch this space...
