10 tips for mowing your lawn

It can often be a case of looking out of your window to suddenly find your lawn has taken over.

The grass is now possibly hiding kids toys, doggy gifts and sometimes even patios. With that in mind, you might find as we approach warmer temperatures, you will need to mow at least every 2 weeks to keep your garden looking like one. A big advantage of regular cutting will mean that you also keep weeds to a minimum.

If you've seen some gardens that more closely resemble a cricket pitch, and would like yours to be the same, here are a few tips on mowing:-

  • Before the first mow rake away moss and dead grass

  • Aerate with a fork

  • Mow in dry conditions

  • Mowing - whenever the grass is growing - the aim is to maintain a constant height throughout the year

  • Mowing infrequently AND mow short = patchy lawn!

  • Don’t leave the mowing for more than 14 days

  • Don’t remove more than 1/3 of lawn at one time

  • If your lawnmower has a roller, change the mowing direction at least every month

  • Each run up the lawn with the lawn mower should slightly overlap the previous one

  • Clean down mower after each use (this helps keep weeds away)

Hopefully, following these steps should leave you with your dream lawn. Don't let your now perfect grass-length go to your head mind, ensure you properly look after your lawnmower! Keep it clean, keep those blades in good check.

When that's all done, you're safe to boast about your perfect cutting technique and send photos to friends and family.
