Animal charities in Cornwall are among those to benefit from £100,000 in donations.

The Animal Rescue Foundation is handing out the cash to 27 groups to ensure that they can keep their doors open and continue to save animals lives.

Over the past 15 years they have raised more than £1 million in donations, which has gone to help cover the costs of vet bills, medicine,, shelter and housing and general day-to-day running costs for charities.

With the help of a generous gift left in a donor’s will, this has allowed the charity to now distribute a huge sum to charities in need.

Each charity will benefit from up to £4,000 in vital funds.

Animal charities that will benefit in the South West are:

    • The Hugs Foundation, Bodmin
    • Last Chance Hotel, Bodmin
    • National Animal Welfare Trust (NAWT), Devon
    • Elm Tree Farm, Bristol
    • St Giles Animal Rescue, Sedgemoor
    • British Hen Welfare Trust, South Molton
    • Fern Animal Sanctuary, Warmbrook

All charities that will receive a sum of money from the Foundation must be able to provide receipts of proof as to where the money has been spent, in order to ensure that the Foundation continues to help those most in need.

The Foundation relies on donations from its members and animal lovers alike, as well as long-standing donors leaving them a sum of money, small or large, within their wills.

A donation of £5 or £10 can help cover the fuel costs to attend and assist a distressed animal, taking it to the nearest shelter for support.

A donation of £15 is enough to allow a local rescue centre to feed and care for an abandoned or neglected cat, dog or pony for two days.

Paul Houlden, founder of Animal Rescue Foundation, said: “We want to thank our regular donors and those who leave us gifts within their wills as they continue to enable us to help numerous charities and thousands of animals every single year. Without them, many poor, defenceless animals don’t stand a chance.

“As well as being appreciative of every pound that we receive in donations, we are also always open to hearing about other animal charities in need that we may be able to help in one way or another.”
