Cornwall’s Lotto Winners

As we get set to play for the £60 million jackpot we take a look back at the Duchy’s previous winners, and their dreams for the cash.

This weekend someone could be winning £57.8m, after the biggest ever lotto jackpot in the UK went unclaimed on Friday. Cornwall has been lucky over the last few years through lottery wins and scratch card prizes, so let’s take a look back.

Mystery Man

Back in August 2012, a mystery Cornish man won a million pounds on the lottery and to this day he still remains unnamed. Mr ‘C’ bought his ticket online for the Euromillions Millionaire Raffle a couple of weeks before the big draw. We still do not know who he is … or what he spent his money on.

St Austell Gardener

St Austell gardener Lee Orchard raked in one million pounds on a scratch card back in March 2013. Lee bought the ticket on a whim in the Roche area and he certainly was not expecting such an immense prize.

Lee told Pirate FM at the time: "I just kept looking at it, probably like ten times. I just couldn't believe my eyes! I went straight back into the shop to get them to check it and the lady said I had to contact Camelot. So then I was thinking, 'It's got to be something'."

Lee said that buying a bigger family home was a priority, especially situated among the peace and quiet of Cornwall. Both Lee and his wife said that they both wanted to keep on working, but the win would definitely take the pressure off things.

Co-Op Syndicate

In Penzance a West Cornwall dad won half a million pounds as part of a lottery syndicate in October 2013. Sixteen workers at the town’s Co-Op took home a share of this incredible prize.

He said it was such a great feeling to be able to share it with his fellow colleagues, one of whom was on their last day at work. The winners had goals to put some money away for their family, a possible holiday to Disney Land and a few new cars.

Bodmin Syndicate

The next year, another Cornish syndicate scooped £1.5 million on the lottery. 25 Bodmin workers from Cornwall Equipment Loans won this prize after three years of buying tickets.

Lena Barnes shared what the workers spent their money on with many treating themselves to holidays, new cars and one was going to get married.

Great Grandad

Last year Peter Congdon won £13.5m on the quadruple lottery roll over. He announced that he would pay for a new treatment centre to help people with Multiple Sclerosis in Cornwall.

His wife battled MS before the Merlin Centre was opened and now Peter will make it possible to help fund the initial running costs as well as provide the funds for a new hydrotherapy pool, sensory space, disabled bath and changing facilities to be built alongside the existing therapy centre.

For himself and his family he told Pirate FM that new cars could be on the cards. When it comes to family holidays, he shared that his family have been going to Butlin’s for 40 years and this would not be changing any time soon.

Lucky Dipper

Shortly afterwards, travel enthusiast Cynthia Holman was thrilled to win £170,000. Cynthia won on a lucky dip scratch card and said that she would pay off her mortgage and will enable her to retire if she wanted to, although she had no plans to do so. She also had plans to make her dream a reality with a fairy tale trip to New York over the Christmas period.

Newquay Couple

In July a loved-up couple from Newquay won £10,000 on the Super Cash Bonus scratch card.

Mark said: "We got engaged in December and have been saving up for our wedding ever since. Between us we have a big family and we wanted them all to be there to celebrate with us which was limiting the venues we could choose from. Now that we don't have to worry about the cost, we can start planning our dream wedding." What a wonderful result.

If you won the lottery, what would you spend it on?
