WATCH: David Cameron Sings A Little Leaving Song

Downing Street

Published at 5:32am 12th July 2016. (Updated at 5:34am 12th July 2016)

David Cameron announced the end of his premiership - then turned on his heel and wandered off singing a little song.

It happened as he walked away from cameras in Downing Street, after announcing he would step down as Prime Minister on Wednesday.

"Doo-doo, doo-doo," David hummed, before finishing with a businesslike "right" as the famous black door swung shut behind him.

It was followed by the noise of his microphone being hastily removed.

It is not clear exactly what tune the Prime Minister was aiming for.

Suggestions have included the closing theme to US political drama The West Wing, the Great Escape or simply a Winnie-The-Pooh style hum.

Make up your own mind here...

Moments before the whimsical ditty, he had paid tribute to his replacement, Theresa May: “She is strong, she is competent, she’s more than able to provide the leadership the country is going to need in the years ahead and she will have my full support,” Cameron said.

“Obviously with these changes we now don’t need to have a prolonged period of transition. And so tomorrow I will chair my last cabinet meeting.

“On Wednesday I will attend the House of Commons for prime minister’s questions. And then after that I expect to go to the Palace and offer my resignation, so we will have a new prime minister in that building behind me by Wednesday evening.”
